Cavity wall ties are steel wire ties installed during the construction of twin cavity walls, usually in homes built after 1900. They are designed to hold the inner & outer leaves of the wall together.
Poor galvanisation techniques in the early part of the century, together with defective pointing of brick work, leads to rusting and eventual failure, which can result in lifting of mortar lines and eventual collapse of the outer leaf.
